Discover Hidden Treasures and Adventures
With the Wreck Diver Specialty Course
2-4 Days, 2-4 Dives
Why would I want to take this course?
Wrecks can be fascinating windows to the past. Ships, airplanes, cars, and more are fun to explore and usually full of life. Wreck dives open up opportunities for discovery, potentially even unlocking a mystery or finding something others may have missed.
Why should I also consider the Deep Diver and Enriched Air/Nitrox specialties if I want to dive wrecks?
Exploring wrecks is a lot of fun, however many wrecks are located beyond the depth limits of an Open Water Diver, and many beyond that of an Advanced Diver. And, since you’ll want to be able to spend as much time as possible exploring, having your Deep Diver and Enriched Air/Nitrox specialties can be helpful to increase your comfortability at depths and increases your No Decompression Limits.
Prerequisites & Requirements
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Adults (15+) must have their Advanced Open Water Diver or Adventure Diver certification or be certified to dive to a maximum depth of 60 feet/18 meters
- Requires reading course materials prior to instruction
- Course duration is 2-4 days
After reading the Wreck Diver specialty material, you’ll complete a knowledge review with your instructor. You will learn about researching the history associated with wreck, including understanding the legal and moral considerations when wreck diving. We must be aware that many of these wrecks are grave sites and so must be respected as such.
We’ll find out about artifacts and whether they can be removed or not. We’ll look at potential hazards and risks. We’ll consider wreck penetration and when it is safe to do that. If penetrating a wreck we’ll learn about additional hazards and considerations as well as the specialized equipment needed, and learn how to use it.
After reading these materials you’ll complete open water dives (4 for PADI and 2 for SSI) where you’ll practice your wreck diving skills.
